FAQ - mideastintel.com

Mideast Intel is a longform analysis publication. Here are the questions readers ask most about how we work, what we cover, and how we read the region.

Who writes Mideast Intel?

A small team of analysts and former journalists, most of whom have spent years inside the region. We attribute editorially-known voices in the byline; we use desk-bylines for sensitive sourcing.

How do you decide what to cover?

Two filters. First, will this story still matter in 60 days? If not, we skip. Second, do we have something to add beyond reporting the headline? If not, we skip again.

Why do you publish so few breaking news pieces?

Because the news cycle is over-served and the analysis cycle is under-served. Wire services do breaking news better than us; we focus on what wire services do not.

How do I get the desk to look at a tip?

Email the desk via our contact page. We do not promise responses, but we read everything. For sensitive material, ask for our PGP key first.

How do you handle unverified information?

If we publish, it has been corroborated. If we are still working on it, it is in our notes, not on the page. The exception is when we explicitly mark a piece as a working hypothesis.

Why is Iran Watch biweekly?

Because the file moves on a slower cadence than headlines suggest. A two-week rhythm gives us time to verify, and gives readers time to actually read. See Iran Watch #1.

Can I republish your articles?

Short excerpts (3 paragraphs or fewer) with attribution and a link, yes. Full reproduction, no - email us first.
